AT&T allows sideloading apps, but they just won’t say so

I’m looking for a good used AT&T Android phone to use with their GoPhone prepaid service. I wanted to “sideload” APKs. Basically, I want to install Android apps from places other than the Android Market.  AT&T previously had a block on that feature, but immediately after the Amazon Appstore came out, they said they were removing the block. I couldn’t find out if AT&T had allowed sideloading on the Sony Xperia Play.  So I got in a (relatively) long and painful chat to get an answer.

Amy [CENSORED]: Thank you for contacting att chat. I understand you have questions regarding sideloading applications?
Andrew LD: Yes
Amy [CENSORED]: I apologize for any frustration and inconvenience. I will be more then happy to help you. I appreciate your business and patience. One moment while I access your account.
Andrew LD: I don’t have the phone right now. I just have a question about a phone I may buy.
Amy [CENSORED]: I understand.
Amy [CENSORED]: You do have the capability of sideloading music and pictures.
Amy [CENSORED]: Applications we cannot guarantee as not all applications work with all phones.
Andrew LD: OK, I understand an app may not work with the phone. But will AT&T allow it to be installed at all?
Andrew LD: From a source besides the Android Market.
Amy [CENSORED]: If it is in compatible format yes it will. You will also have the option of using the Amazon app store as well.
Andrew LD: Okay, so you allow it. Thanks!

So there you have it. She dodged and weaved as best she could, but I wriggled an answer out of her! The Xperia Play on AT&T allows you to sideload APK files.

Republic Wireless is coming with an LG Optimus V or S?

Republic Wireless’s teaser page looks interesting. $20/month unlimited cell phone plan? Sounds good, but they aren’t saying what phones are available. However, there may be a hint. The first image on the site are two hand assembling an Android phone. You can barely make out a 3.2 MP camera sensor. A bit of Googling reveals that the phone is the LG Optimus V or S. The V is on Virgin Mobile, and the S is on Sprint. The phone is old, with a 600 MHz processor in a sea of 1+ GHz competitors. On top of that, the phone runs Android 2.2, while other phones run 2.3 or 4.0. If this is their only phone at launch, I will be very disappointed.

Update: Yep, it’s the Optimus! Check out their site at republicwireless.com!

Check out my new computer!

I built my computer a few months ago and have stopped oohing and aahing over it long enough to post.  It has a quad-core 2.9 GHz AMD processor, 4 GB or RAM, a 1 GB graphics card, and a 320 GB hard drive.  All for $450!  I got it as part of a Newegg bundle deal, although I had to purchase the hard drive seperately, and I had to assemble it myself.  I supplied the monitor, DVD drive, speakers, keyboard, mouse, and gaming controller (all from my old computer).  I thought it would take a week to build it from the parts, but surprisingly, it only took a few hours!  I have ordered Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit, and it’s on its way!  I hope this game can really push my computer to its best.

Update: Hot Pursuit is great, and I got an Xbox 360 controller to better control my car.

My iOS 6 wish list

After seeing the feature list for iOS 5, Steve still left me wanting more.  Check out this list for the top features that I want in the next big release of iOS:

  • Landscape orientation lock
  • Video camera zoom
  • Origami transition on iPhones and iPod Touches
  • Android-style scrolling wallpaper
  • Video camera effects, like those from the iPod Nano 5G
  • Live app icons (Like Calendar)

iOS App extravaganza!

I haven’t been posting lately because I’m addicted to my apps. There’s too many! So here’s a compendium of app-related posts: (continue reading…)

Impending iPad 2 launch! (Updated)

Apples will launch the iPad 2 on March 2nd, sending out an invite to tech blogs with a peeled corner showing the device. (Too bad Gizmodo didn’t get one. Their invitation is probably sitting next to the iPhone 4 prototype they “found”. )

Update:
The iPad 2 was launched! It has the same low-resolution display, 2 sucky cameras, and is slightly faster. Wait for the iPad 3, which may be coming this fall.

Free barcode reading apps for the iPhone

There are lots of cool barcode readers for the iPhone and iPod Touch 4 out there.  I did my research, and found the best free ones.  They are:

  • Redlaser
  • Neoreader
  • iNigma 4
  • Microsoft Tag Reader

Plots you see in every series of animated shows

I find it annoying that those animated kid’s shows have so much in common when it comes to plot.  I’ll show what I mean with these examples:

Not all Androids are Droids (and why Star Wars got paid)

When you see a little green robot on a smartphone, you probably say, “Nice Droid!”  Too bad you are absolutely wrong.

My cousins used to live next to Steve Jobs

My millionaire cousins used to live next to the Apple CEO himself, or so they say.  I wonder if they’re bluffing, after all, they know that I’m a humongous nerd.  (But I still hope they’re telling the truth!)
